Job Summary

The Executive Director of Technical Accounting will play an integral role in interacting with and advising Sprint's senior leadership team on technical accounting matters related to both US GAAP and IFRS compliance. This role will require a proactive approach toward evaluating proposed technical standards, such as the new revenue recognition and leasing standards, as well as guiding multiple organizational disciplines through the steps necessary to apply these standards when they are enacted. Reporting to the Assistant Controller, the successful candidate must be versatile, proactive and client-service oriented with a strong desire to grow professionally and to lead process improvements. This person will also work closely with Sprint's external reporting group to ensure the Company's financial information and disclosures are in compliance with all reporting requirements.


  • Manage a team of technical accounting professionals while fostering an environment of strong ethics, morale, leadership and teamwork. Serve as a key member of the Controllers' Organization leadership team who contributes to and effectively influences decisions.
  • Monitor and drive progress on the resolution of technical accounting issues by working closely with other organizations within the Company and the external auditors.
  • Develop and lead the implementation of accounting policies for both US GAAP and IFRS, including the implementation of new accounting standards, particularly for the new revenue recognition and leasing standards.
  • Monitor the activities of accounting standard setting bodies (i.e. FASB, IASB, AICPA, and EITF) and the SEC and prepare operational/financial impact assessments of proposed and adopted accounting standards and SEC regulations. Manage the comment letter process for exposure documents which are relevant to the Company.
  • Provide accounting support for M&A activities, including supporting due diligence efforts by evaluating accounting policy risks, reviewing agreements, participating in developing the accounting positions and supporting the integration of accounting operations of acquired businesses.
  • Research accounting literature and apply technical standards to complex business issues and transactions, including the areas of revenue recognition, business combinations, valuations, rebates and incentives and leases.
  • Review and prepare, as necessary, written accounting and financial reporting position papers for submission to senior management and external auditors.
  • Establish and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with senior executives, finance directors and other internal stakeholders to understand the business and ensure timely exchange of information.
  • Strong knowledge of the COSO internal control framework and SOX compliance.
  • Assist departments with the review and preparation of the annual and quarterly financial statements.
  • Participate on ad hoc projects as required.
  • Additional overtime mandatory during quarter-end, year-end, and special assignments.

Basic Qualifications
  • BS degree in Accounting or equivalent, CPA certification required
  • 10+ years of highly technical experience, Big 4 public accounting experience with large SEC registrants
  • Consistent track record as a top performer throughout his or her career
  • Excellent technical accounting skills and experience in researching, interpreting and applying US GAAP and IFRS to complex accounting issues
  • Effective problem solving, methodical, detailed oriented, and analytical, with the ability to manage cross-functional projects and collaborate with different individuals and functions across a large organization
  • Able to work independently and multi-task multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong critical thinking and written and oral communication skills

  • MS/MBA preferred
